Medicine, Taken

MSU won the game by routinely getting the edge in the running game.  Running outside the tackles has been a problem for Michigan's defense all season, I was hopeful they would address it and shore that up, they didn't.

The 4th down play was the play that turned the game.  Michigan converts there and it's a different ballgame. (obviously the pick 6 was huge as well, but momentum had already swung on the 4th down play)  Hats off to the Sparties for a good call blitzing the corner on the short side of the field.  In those instances, as the offensive team, Michigan just threw scissors against rock, it happens.

Speaking of that pick 6, for as poor of a game as Denard had, I think Vincent Smith didn't run the proper route (it was a hot read situation) on the play and that was one of the few passes where Denard didn't make a mistake.

MSU played the entire game with 8 (usually 9) in the box.  Denard couldn't make them pay, that's worrisome for Michigan as the season goes on.  You have to believe all the future opponents will follow the same game plan, putting a ton of players in the box and bring pressure on the blitz as well.

The home field played a big part in the game.  State was able to time the snap count regularly and that really helped with all the pressure.  In fact, Jerel Worthy was largely ineffective and jumped offsides twice when Michigan was varying the snap counts early, but as the game wore on it seems MSU (and Worthy in particular) was able to time the counts more and more and put the Michigan offensive line in a tough spot.  The Wolverines actually gained 150 yards on running plays, but gave back close to 70 yards on sacks, ugly.

Also ugly, both sets of uniforms.  I thought the striped uniforms looked alright for Michigan against Notre Dame, as it was simply maize and blue, but adding the maize and blue onto the all whites was just too much IMO.  As for the Spartans, I kept thinking I was watching Missouri versus Baylor or something.  Either that, or Nike gave MSU some hand-me-downs from Oregon.  What was the chant at the game?  "Go Green! Go Bronze!"? (Also, what was with all the trash in Spartan Stadium?  I know it was windy, but there was trash literally flying all over the place)

Hats off to Sparty, they were the better team and deserved the victory.  In fact, while Michigan certainly had a chance to win, (down 7 with the ball at the MSU 9 yard line) I think that was mostly due to MSU being so undisciplined and committing so many stupid penalties.  Against Wisconsin, those penalties will get you beat, Michigan just isn't good enough to take advantage.

Michigan fans all over the internet are freaking out that this is just like the last few years...I don't think so.  MSU was maybe the best team Michigan will face all season, playing in their first true road environment.  The offense played poorly, but the defense seems to be vastly improved.  They missed some tackles and need to learn to keep contain as well as how to take on cut blocks, but the improved defense and Denards on again, off again ability to torture defenses is going to make every game winnable or losable from here on out.  Taking nothing away from MSU, Michigan played their worst game of the season Saturday.  Against Notre Dame, they played that way for 3 quarters but then turned it on in the 4th.  In other games, they played poorly for a half, but this game they never got into a rhythm offensively and Denard never found his accuracy.  It was mostly all oh no Denard.  I think it cannot be understated how different the current offense is under Borges in comparison to last year's offense under Rodriguez.  A lot of the formations and plays may appear similar, but Denard is now tasked with making pre-snap reads (whereas last year that would come from the sidelines) and then also go through an honest to god progression instead of hitting his first read on quick hitting plays. He'll get better as time goes on and I think his accuracy will improve as he becomes more comfortable with his decision making.

Some other things I found interesting:

Denard finished with 18 carries, but probably only 10 of those were designed runs.  Why run him so much against lesser competition, in better passing conditions and then hold him back in this game?  Hopefully he doesn't have some sort of injury they aren't telling the media about.

Cunningham was not a huge factor.  I think the wind affected both QB's a lot, as Cousins did almost all of his damage in the two quarters when he was heading with the wind.

Which begs the question, why did Borges keep throwing on 2nd and 8 in the 3rd quarter (heading into the wind)?  Or on first and ten?  Clearly the wind was affecting the play, take your chances running it 3 times and then punting.  Denard may just break a tackle or make someone miss and go the distance.

And lastly,

I wasn't going to mention this, but since Tbone brought it up....Defending William Gholston's actions is ridiculous.  He played classless, dirty football and plays like that have no place in the game.  Remember, that's what this is, a game.  Trying to intentionally injure an opposing player or throwing punches goes well over the line of playing hard, intense football.  Gholston got blocked onto the ground in a routine play and then got up and punched his blocker in the throat. The play on Denard should have gotten him ejected in the first place, as he piled on late and then twisted Robinson's head by the facemask.  Denard was trapped under bodies and couldn't move, making it an even more dangerous play.  Even on the first play of the game, if you watch the replay, Gholston puts Lewans injured elbow into an armbar, which isn't a routine football play and appears directly intended to injure.  He should be suspended by the B1G.  Or by Dantonio if he wanted to run a respectable program.  Don't forget, these plays cost MSU 30 yards in the ballgame.

  1. finally saw the head twist replay. thats going too far waayyyy too far. the punch is nothing though Lewans was picking up gholston by the facemask. a punch would be expected there. that head twist is just plain wrong though. not sure what will happen here with discipline.

they were bags of hot pretzels. no joke. those soft guys you eat cheese with. the place was frickin WINDY. my hat blew three rows back at one point.

they should have ran denard more. he was effective running, and even more effective when lined up at as a wide out.

  2. also, UM is an 8 win team at minimum. and you should beat OSU. thats gotta be good after the last three years.

  3. Missed the game, I was watching livestreams of NBA players dunking at junior college gyms.

  4. I don't want to try and defend Gholston, because under normal circumstances they don't deserve to be defended. But this outrage as if Gholston is the first player in history to do something dirty/dumb in a football game is rediculous.

He deserves to be suspended. That's consistent with what the B1G did to- hey a UM player Jonas Mouton- after he threw a punch against ND a couple years ago. Illinois had a player suspended earlier this year as well. Hell you can suspend Gholston for two or three games and I don't mind. Again I don't want to defend him personally.

But it's crap to read all the Michigan fans saying "This is just evidence that MSU is a dirty, classless program." Before this game we had 2 personal foul penalties in the previous 5 games. So it's not like there was a track record for this for MSU.

This was one player getting out of control. It has happened to others before and likely will again, at some point at UM. So save me the "We're Michigan, at least we lost with class." If a Michigan fan tells me they wouldn't have taken a couple personal foul penalties on their guys in exchange for a win I am awfully skeptical.

I've just been really irritated that once again after an MSU victory a lot of UM fans are spending their time taking shots at MSU's program. It's old. It's four straight, and MSU looks like it has a pretty decent chance to play for another B1G title this year. And by the way, MSU's defense has 1 senior starter. And depending on what Worthy does is likely returning 19 of 22 guys from the 2 deep. Might be time for a little bit of respect for the program Dantonio has built.

And for the record, this isn't really directed at Pat. More the commentary elsewhere in the blogosphere.

  5. Well, there's a lot of evidence to suggest Dantonio is more of a win at all costs coach than someone who holds his players accountable first and foremost. He's certainly a good coach, but his integrity has a builder of quality man can be reasonably and fairly debated on both sides.

I think your points are all mostly true. Clearly Michigan fans would simply prefer to win.

I will point you to this post on MGOBLOG.

    http://mgoblog.com/diaries/miami-state-spartans-personal-foul-u-20

It shows that in the Dantonio era, in the MSU-UM game, State has accumulated 16 penalties of either personal fouls, unsportsmanlike conduct or roughing the passer. In that same span, Michigan has been flagged for 5 of those penalties. Small samples size applies, but that's pointing toward either an undisciplined team, or a dirty team.

I honestly wasn't going to bring up the Gholston stuff on the blog at all, but then Zach tried to defend him.

Also, on the last couple of paragraphs. I certainly respect what Dantonio has done. He's done a great job. MSU has the inside track on making the B1G championship game, but the difficulties of the schedule could give Michigan a chance to win the league as well. We'll find out a lot more this weekend.

I find solace in the fact that Michigan is digging out of the worst stretch in half a century, MSU is enjoying their best stretch in half a century, and the game was in doubt until the last 5 minutes.

Spartans should be pounding their chests a little bit these days, but it's still great to be a Michigan Wolverine.

  6. One more thing, the media has done their best to get Hoke or any of the players to call MSU dirty, they have all refrained. I like it. We lost, fair and square, now we move on.

  7. mgoblog is the Der Sturmer of sports blogging. Anything they post related to a game Michigan plays in can be equated to dog shit.

Saying Dantonio is a bad man and poor at creating quality men is dumbfounded. Greg Jones, Blair White, Arthur Ray Jr. Javon Ringer. All must be really awful people. Glenn Winston? kicked off team. Dion Sims? its not fun having uncles that are scum. Ill defend the face punch until the end of days. And the idea that Mark Dantonio is some sort of evil genius, sent here to sabotage the lives of college students to advance his coaching profile. I will not defend the helmet twist. Gholston should be suspended for the Wisconsin game, and maybe another.

Michigan is above it all though..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPYueAc5XAE That punch is 100xs more violent than the punch that Gholston threw.

    some more reading. http://www.annarbor.com/sports/um-football/nasty-taylor-lewan-is-ready-to-contribute-at-left-tackle-for-michigan/

“He is, just, dirty sometimes, which is what a Big Ten offensive lineman should be like,” Roh said. “Just a nasty guy, a guy that you’re like, ‘I don’t want to go against him again.’ And I never hear someone on the defense saying, ‘Oh, Taylor’s just a really nice guy to go against.’ Everyone is like, ‘He’s holding me, he’s knocking me over when the play is over.’

sometimes a B1G defensive lineman needs to be dirty too. and sometimes those players are just plain better than the opposition. And sometimes a fan base cannot admit it.

  8. That was a dirty play by Mouton no doubt. No place for that in football. He got suspended. He deserved it.

  9. Also, you just compared a sports blog to a Nazi propaganda newspaper...

Mgoblog actually is a very stat intensive and focused blog which makes it more difficult to be biased. Sure, it's all Michigan fans, equating things on there to dog shit is, well, very Sparty of you.

I never said Dantonio was a bad man...I said that his integrity can be questioned. Also, bringing up Glenn Winston to prove a point about Dantonio's clean program is maybe the dumbest thing you could do. I lol'd at that.

  10. I agree that Sparty was the better team this weekend but I find it very hard to defend the punch. There is no place for that in football and no acceptable excuse. I'm not going to say MSU is a dirty team/program but several plays (mostly by a single player) did a lot to hurt a good reputation. No doubt I am bitter after losing 4 straight but the hardest thing to accept was that 4th and inches play call. I don't care if people say it was a great defensive call by MSU or could've been a TD if executed correctly, its freakin 4th and INCHES and this is BIG TEN FOOTBALL! You run the power I. Bo likely had a seizure in his grave after watching that play. I still like Hoke but man that hurt. Sucks we have to wait another week to redeem ourselves...

  11. that fourth and inches was a bad play call. However, had we not blitzed, it have not mattered. Both were equally good and bad play calls for each time. (i think you get the first down there then go for TD, rather than go for TD on fourth, but im not a coach)
